Hey PI-Fans,
This week’s releases really need no explanation.
Air, Land and Sea: Critters at War and Critters at War: Flies, Lies and Supplies are thematic reskins of the excellent 2-player card game Air, Land and Sea and Spies, Lies and Supplies. Redrawn with cartoon animals, the game maintains the simple elegance of the area-majority hand management card game, with players trying to play card totals which outscore their opponent in two or more of the respective scoring zones.
Except with fuzzy animals. Given the Bloomburrow Prerelease we held recently for Magic: The Gathering, I’m sensing a theme.
The other big arrival of the week Dorfromantic: The Board Game took home to prestigious 2023 Spiel des Jahres. Itself a board game adaptation of the surprisingly chill videogame Dorfromantic, the titular game sees players collaboratively laying down tiles representing areas of the rural countryside. In Dorfromantik: The Board Game, up to six players work together to lay hexagonal tiles to create a beautiful landscape and try to fulfill the orders of the population, while at the same time laying as long a track and as long a river as possible, functioning as a resettable campaign-style board game where player’s access to tiles evolves and develops as they play the game.
As a game, Dorfromantic manages to keep it’s originator’s chill design, being more of a test of how well designed and beautiful the players wish to build a countryside scene, rather than pitting them up against a hard win-or-lose condition.
As always, we’ll keep doing what we do, and filling the shelves up with games as we go.
Hope to see you around in the store, sometimes, folks!
