Hey PI-Fans,
This week’s titles skew towards the younger audience, though there’s always room at the gaming table for the young at heart.
While the classic Bohnanza likewise pops back onto the scene with a special edition Bohnanza Dahlias that rethemes the evergreen bean game with a floral bent while our Chessex dice tray overflows with an infusion of gamer candy, the focus this week seems to be trending towards amazing games to play with the family.
Unstable Unicorns For Kids, Clack! Thwack and None of a Kind fill out the family gaming niche with aplomb with a variety of mechanics ranging from take-that style player conflict in Unstable Unicorns to speed reaction with Clack! Thwack and puzzle pattern recognition in None of a Kind.
These fast paced titles are perfect for a family game nights while staying little one friendly, making them well suited for any parent wanting to spend some gaming time with their kids.
Bohnanza: Dahlias is a special edition of Bohnanza for 3-5 players that features the same gameplay as the original design.
In the game, you plant, then harvest flower cards in order to earn coins. Each player starts with a hand of random flower cards, and each card has a number on it corresponding to the number of that type of flower in the deck. Unlike in most other card games, you can’t rearrange the order of cards in hand, so you must use them in the order that you’ve picked them up from the deck — unless you can trade them to other players, which is the heart of the game. On a turn, you must plant the first one or two cards in your hand into the “fields” in front of you. Each field can hold only one type of flower, so if you must plant a type of flower that’s not in one of your fields, then you must harvest a field to make room for the new arrival. When you harvest flowers, you receive coins based on the number of cards in that field and the “meter” for that particular type of flower.
In the game of CLACK! Thwack!, players you must thwack all the cards in play that match the dice combination rolled with their suction-cup thwacker to claim them for themselves. Cards each show three objects on them, with those objects being red, green, or blue in color and an animal, tree, or vehicle in type. If you roll “0 – red”, then you slap all the cards that have zero red objects on them; if you roll “2 – animal”, then you slap all the cards with exactly two animals on them. If you’re correct, you claim the cards, then refill the display to seven cards.
If no cards on display match the die roll, grab the “NO MATCH” tile in the center of the player area. If you’re correct, you collect all seven cards; if not, you must give a previously collected card to each other player at the table.
When all the cards have been claimed, whoever has collected the most cards wins.
None of a Kind, is a quick-playing pattern-building game. The game includes 80 color cards, with each color card having up to four words on it, with the words being one of five colors but printed in one of the remaining four colors.
Shuffle the color cards, then spread them out on the table. Reveal as many points cards as the number of players. Each player takes a starting card and places it at the beginning of a row. Simultaneously, players start flipping over cards to find one that fits next to their rightmost card, with “fits” meaning that neither of the two colors on the rightmost card are repeated on the new card and the number of words showing on the two cards differ. Once a player has a certain number of cards in their row — they call “Stop!” and players check their card rows for errors, discarding any mistaken card and all cards played after it. The player with the longest row of cards claims the highest point card on display; the player with the second-longest row the next highest point card; and so on.
